13) Who is your least favourite character to write for? Why?
Jonah, Jonah, Jonah.
His amped up frat boy schtick is so incredibly specific, and so recognisably American, that every time I write a line of dialogue for him I’m convinced it doesn’t even come close to the real thing. Not that one should imagine a fanfic can ever capture the essence of the actual show, but…I’d like it to be at least a decent facsimile.
In case you’re curious, this is why I don’t tend to write Jonah very much, or – if I do – why I describe what he does rather than giving him lines of actual dialogue.
I’m particularly cautious about it I think because…well, nine times out of ten, I can tell when an American-English speaker is writing something that is supposed to be set in England or Ireland or wherever, and the linguistic slips are invariably quite jarring. They always pull me right out of the story.
I have tried to write as much in American-English as I can – but I suspect my avoidance of writing Jonah has contributed to whatever measure of success I’ve had in doing that.
