I WAS WATCHING NEVADA AGAIN AND OH MY GOD WHEN DAN CROWDS OVER AMY NEAR THE DOOR MY LIL ROMANTIC HEART ALMOST DIED I REALLY HOPE THEY PLAY UP THE HEIGHT DIFFERENCE BECAUSE GOD ISNT THAT JUST PURE AND FUNNY COMEDY AND NONE OF THAT WEIRDLY MISOGYNISTIC AMY JOKES THANK YOU VERY MUCH ( *wink wink nudge nudge* for your next chapter of what might have been
It’s honestly one of my favourite moments in the show – I think we can count on one hand the number of occasions when Amy has seemed confident and happy like that, and it’s nice to see.
So far, I think Veep has played down the height difference between Dan and Amy for solid storytelling reasons. They wanted to establish them as equals, and made sure to film them in a way that reflected that. So, Amy and Dan generally take up equal amounts of the frame, and even in close-ups, they avoid making it look as though Dan is looming over her. I would not be surprised if they put Anna Chlumsky on a box for some of those shots. (I imagine a lot of this also applies to how they film Julia Louis-Dreyfus – especially in her scenes with Hugh Laurie – as they wouldn’t want to undermine Selina visually. They had some fun with this in the Debate episode with the other baseball coach candidate).
I only realised they were doing that when I saw a behind the scenes photo and was genuinely startled by how BIG Reid Scott was compared to Anna Chlumsky. In real life he looks like he could throw her over his shoulder and walk away with her without breaking a sweat…and that mostly doesn’t come across on screen. They even manage to make him look SMALL in scenes with Timothy Simons (and okay everyone looks small beside Timothy Simons, but the height difference there really isn’t that big).
They’ve only played up the size difference in scenes that are overtly ABOUT Dan and Amy’s romantic relationship – and sometimes, I think it’s used to underline Amy’s vulnerability. Compare how they film Dan in 5.03 with how they film Buddy in 6.01-6.03 – the height difference is similar in both cases, but Buddy never looks even remotely threatening to Amy emotionally, whereas Dan… (dressing him in a black suit and tie helps, as it makes him look even bigger).
I think they can have some fun with this in the next season if they want to. Now that Amy’s pregnant, I think every scene between them is going to read as romantic even if only subtextually – and I think they’re well established enough as characters that they won’t have to worry as much about undermining Amy’s character by making her look small. Amy backing Kent forcing up against a wall was funny – Amy doing the same thing to Dan while eight and a half months pregnant will be a lot funnier.
But dear anon – I’m not sure what you mean about What Might Have Been? The Nevada-gone-right chapter is chapter three, if that helps?
